Diagnostic and Operative Hysteroscopy

Diagnostic and operative hysteroscopy is a minimally invasive procedure that allows surgeons to directly view the inside of the uterus to detect and understand any possible uterine abnormalities. This procedure is performed with a lighted-telescope instrument called a hysteroscope, through which it derives its name.

By medically inserting the hysteroscope through the vagina and cervix, the hysteroscope allows the doctor to view the uterine wall in detail to find the possible cause of the symptoms experienced by the patient. The precise diagnosis offered by this procedure helps find the root cause of specific problems and helps assess the need for operative surgery. If surgery is needed to treat the condition, operative hysteroscopy is performed where tiny specialized medical instruments are used to surgically treat or repair the uterine abnormalities. Being a minimally invasive procedure, the incisions are tiny, with less scarring and faster recovery.

Diagnostic and Operative Hysteroscopy – When is it Recommended?

Abnormal bleeding between periods, pelvic pain, and infertility are some of the possible symptoms that could warrant hysteroscopy when other treatment options fail to provide answers or relief. Some of the most common uterine conditions that are diagnosed and treated by this procedure include but are not limited to:

  • Fibroids and Polyps: These abnormal growths in the uterus are often the cause of abnormal bleeding. Operative hysteroscopy can be used to remove them.
  • Adhesions: Adhesions are the built-up scar tissue from prior surgeries that can cause fertility problems and pain.
  • Abnormal Bleeding: Heavy, irregular, or between-period bleeding is mostly caused by an unidentified abnormality which can be detected and treated using hysteroscopy.

Procedure at Atom Fertility:

  1. Preparation: The cervix of the patient is dilated to allow easier passage of the hysteroscope. A local or general anaesthesia is used for this procedure, with the choice based on the complexity of the procedure.
  2. Hysteroscopy Insertion: The hysteroscope (lighted-telescope) is inserted through the vagina and cervix into the uterine cavity of the woman. A sterile fluid is used for better visualization of the uterus on the screen.
  3. Evaluation and Treatment: The doctor examines the uterine lining and possible abnormalities. Depending on their findings and quick analysis, tiny specialized instruments could be used to operate and remove fibroids, polyps, or scar tissue.
  4. Removal and Recovery: The hysteroscope and the tiny instruments are removed and incisions are closed up. Patients may experience very mild cramping or spotting which resolves quickly.
