Hysteroscopy
Hysteroscopy Treatment
Hysteroscopy is a minimally invasive gynecological procedure that helps diagnose and treat uterine problems to improve pregnancy chances.
Fibroids, intrauterine adhesions, polyps, and congenital uterine malformations are among the most common causes of infertility in women, requiring serious attention. These conditions disrupt the fertilization and implantation process, making conception more challenging.
Not only do these abnormalities affect a woman’s chances of becoming pregnant, but they can also hinder her ability to carry a pregnancy to term successfully. Correcting these uterine abnormalities is essential to improve pregnancy chances in infertile women affected by these conditions.
Hysteroscopy emerges as a safe, cost-effective, and revolutionary gynaecological procedure for diagnosing and treating these uterine abnormalities that contribute to female infertility.
In general, hysteroscopy procedure is recommended in the following conditions:
- Patients experiencing abnormal vaginal bleeding.
- Presence of polyps, fibroids, septum, or adhesions impacting fertility and overall health.
- Incidence of congenital abnormalities of the genital tract.
- Retention of placental remains from a previous pregnancy or miscarriage in the uterine cavity.
- When the fertility specialist requires uterine tissue for further diagnosis.
- Patients finding it challenging to conceive or have experienced multiple miscarriages for reasons unknown.
Hysteroscopy Procedure
Hysteroscopy is the procedure that can be performed either during the hospital stay or on an outpatient basis. Though the procedure may slightly vary from facility to facility here is the general outline of the procedure:
- ZPatient positioned on operating table with their feet in stirrups. The vaginal area cleansed with antiseptic solution to begin the procedure.
- ZThe Cervix is dilated using medications and specialized surgical dilators to prepare for the procedure.
- ZVaginal speculum is gently inserted to facilitate hysteroscopy insertion into the uterine cavity.
- ZHysteroscopy is carefully guided through the cervix into the uterus, while the uterine cavity is filled with either fluid or gas to enhance visibility.
- ZLight emitted by the hysteroscopy illuminates the interior of the uterine cavity, aiding the surgeon's visualization.
- ZThe uterine wall is thoroughly examined for abnormalities and the specimens collected for biopsy if necessary.
- ZIn cases that require surgical intervention, small instruments are inserted to carry out the procedure. In complex procedures, a laparoscope may be also utilized concurrently to examine the external surfaces of the uterus.
- ZFollowing the completion of the procedure, any fluid or gas used to distend the cavity is drained, and the hysteroscopy is gently removed.
By clearing out the uterine abnormality, fertility in women is restored, which further increases the chances of pregnancy. In a few cases, ART procedures like IVF, IUI, and ICSI are preceded by hysteroscopy to enable successful conception.
