Dilatation and Curettage

Dilatation and Curettage is a minor gynecological procedure that is commonly performed to diagnose and treat abnormal uterine bleeding conditions. Using the D&C procedure, the gynecologist removes the residual tissue in the uterus that is left behind during or after abortion, miscarriage, or even after childbirth.

Reasons for having the D&C procedure can vary from patient to patient. The Gynaec performs most D&Cs after the patients complain about abnormal bleeding problems. Other common problems that the D&C procedure can solve are:

  • Polyps (extra tissue which can grow inside the uterine wall)
  • Incomplete miscarriages
  • Uterine infections
  • Bleeding problems after sexual intercourse.

Procedure: Dilatation and Curettage at Atom Fertility

  1. The patient is positioned on the table with their feet in stirrups to provide an unobstructed view.
  2. The Obstetrician or Gynecologist examines the uterus and administers medication for sedation or relaxation.
  3. Dilation of the cervix may be initiated using a thin surgical rod or medications to soften it.
  4. A speculum is used to widen the vaginal canal, facilitating access to the cervix.
  5. Smooth rods are inserted to widen the cervix gradually.
  6. Once the cervix reaches a diameter of around 7 to 8 mm, a hysteroscopy is performed to examine the uterus for abnormalities using a small light and camera.
  7. A spoon-shaped surgical tool called a curette is inserted into the uterus through the dilated cervix.
  8. The curette is used to scrape off abnormal tissue such as polyps, endometriosis, or fibroids or to collect samples for further diagnosis.
  9. Recovery time for the procedure is generally short, often completed in 30 minutes or less, with the duration of hospital stay depending on the patient’s post-procedure condition.

When is Dilatation and Curettage recommended to patients?

A Gynecologist can recommend the D&C procedure to diagnose an unidentified fertility problem or as a treatment option to solve an existing uterine condition (Therapeutic D&C). As a diagnosis procedure, D&C is recommended if a patient suffers from abnormal uterine bleeding or if your gynecologist has identified any abnormal cells during a routine cervical checkup.

By removing the contents of the uterus, D&C can be a treatment option to treat many uterine conditions. It can be performed to remove a molar pregnancy, cervical or uterine polyps, clear out the placenta remains after delivery, miscarriage, or abortion. It can also be used to prevent infection or heavy uterine bleeding.
